Omega Speedmaster Full Set 1999 (Display Back) Ref. 35725000

In 1999 Omega continued the rich legacy of the Speedmaster through the release of a 'display back' model, showcasing a polished manual wind 1863 movement. This model, sold in 1999, is 35725000 Ref. and maintains the iconic design of the famous Speedmaster to be worn on the moon in 1969. Its 42mm diameter, non-rotating tachymetre bezel and famous monochromatic dial remain uninterrupted. Omega's quite literal hidden treasure in this Speedmaster series was uncovered for the first time through a display back case. Typically sealed beneath steel, the 1863 movement is allowed to shine while protected by a sapphire crystal. The brand took painstaking measures to perfect this new innovation, polishing each component of the movement individually. The sheer amount of man-hours needed to assemble this reference resulted in its significant leap in price in the Omega catalogues compared to standard variations of the Speedmaster.
This reference came of an age where limited edition Speedmasters were few and far between, unlike the current day. In its time this model, characterised by its sapphire display back, was the pinnacle of modern Moonwatches, offering more aesthetic appeal than its predecessors. This particular example was the first to experiment with the display back, still retaining a hesalite crystal on the front of the watch. Later examples incorporated a sandwich of sapphire on both the front and back- a considerable deviation from the traditional Moonwatch.
This example remains in very good condition and is accompanied by its original packaging, booklets and guarantee dated 11/05/1999.(0N HOLD)
