Omega Speedmaster 'Dark Side of the Moon' Apollo 8
Few wristwatches enjoy a legacy like Omega’s Speedmaster. Its time on the wrists of Apollo 11’s crew during the first mission to the moon in 1969 cemented the now legendary ‘Speedy’ as one of history’s most beloved chronographs. Hand-picked by NASA for its functional prowess and durability in an airless environment, the Speedmaster rapidly transcended from an aerospace tool to a design classic. The Speedmaster remains a staple of Omega’s catalogue in 2020 - one of the many great sports chronographs of the ‘60s and ‘70s to dictate designs in the current watch market.
Omega's 'Dark Side of the Moon' collection commemorates the voyage of Apollo 8, a team of American astronauts who orbitted the moon 10 times over 20 hours during its mission. This was our first glimpse at the dark side of the moon- a major human achievement.
This variation of the famous and collectible Moonwatch features a blackened ceramic case with a skeletonised dial, offering a glimpse at the esteemed Calibre 1861 movement - impressively laser-ablated to reveal imagery of the lunar surface. Accents of yellow pierce through a monochrome design, offering a unique character to this modern Moonwatch. The display back case reveals the Calibre 1861 movement in more detail, with the words 'We'll see you on the other side" displayed around the case back's circumference- Jim Lovel''s final words spoken to ground control before Apollo 8's voyage to the dark side of the moon.
What is certainly a collectible and complex modern version of the Moonwatch, Omega have poured their innovative spirit into making this Dark Side of the Moon Speedmaster a totally unique watch while retaining the brilliance of the sixties classic. This example is accompanied by its original inner and outer packaging, pouch, cleaning cloth, booklets, cards and guarantee dated 04/06/2019.
