OMEGA “53” ROYAL AIR FORCE PILOTS/NAVIGATOR’S WATCH

The ministry of defence commissioned Omega to make a substantial and robust timepiece to be used by pilots and navigators. The watch they produced was this classic collectable model in a very large (for the period) 37mm case. Only 5900 pieces were produced, all issued in 1953. The highly regarded and accurate Omega CAL 283 manual wind movement was fitted. To solve the magmatism problem, Omega put an inner iron cover and soft iron dial to produce an anti- magnetic cage.
The dials were originally produced using radium for luminosity which was later discovered to be potentially dangerously radio -active, so in the sixties the MOD fitted new tritium dial with the T in a circle bellow the logo.
This is a lovely example showing very few marks or dents which would usually be found on “tool” watches.
